Curious about the role of Vitamin D in fertility? | Care Fertility

Written by Dr Alison Richardson | Feb 25

Vitamin D, often called the ‘sunshine vitamin’, plays a vital role in our overall health. It’s essential for bone strength, immune function, and hormone regulation—but did you know it could also impact fertility?

Understanding Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is crucial for strong bones, but it also plays a key role in hormone production and balance. A deficiency can lead to health issues like osteoporosis and hormonal imbalances, making it important to maintain healthy levels through sun exposure, diet, or supplementation.

Vitamin D deficiency and its causes

Low Vitamin D levels can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, and a weakened immune system. Over time, a deficiency can lead to more serious health issues. Common causes include:

  • Limited sun exposure, particularly in colder climates
  • Digestive conditions that impact absorption, such as coeliac or Crohn’s disease
  • Diets lacking in Vitamin D-rich foods, like oily fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products

The link between Vitamin D and fertility

Research has increasingly suggested that Vitamin D may influence fertility in both men and women. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that women with sufficient Vitamin D levels were more likely to produce high-quality embryos and achieve pregnancy through IVF compared to those with deficiencies (Endocrine Society).

Another study published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology found that taking moderate daily Vitamin D supplements could help improve pregnancy rates in women struggling with infertility (PubMed Central).

For men, research suggests that Vitamin D may play a role in improving semen quality. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that men with Vitamin D deficiency had lower sperm production and motility compared to those with normal Vitamin D levels (Oxford Academic). Another study in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology found that Vitamin D supplements may help improve sperm movement and shape in men dealing with infertility (PubMed Central).

Benefits of maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels

Ensuring you have sufficient Vitamin D may:

  • Support hormonal balance, which is crucial for reproductive health
  • Improve ovarian function and egg quality in women
  • Enhance sperm quality and motility in men
  • Contribute to better pregnancy outcomes

How to boost your Vitamin D levels

If you’re looking to improve your Vitamin D intake, here are some simple steps:

  • Sunlight exposure: Spending time outdoors, particularly during midday, can help your body produce Vitamin D naturally – but remember to wear SPF to prevent sun damage to your skin!
  • Diet: Include foods rich in Vitamin D, such as oily fish (salmon, mackerel), egg yolks, and fortified dairy or plant-based alternatives.
  • Supplements: If you struggle to get enough Vitamin D through sunlight and diet, a daily supplement may be beneficial. Current UK Government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter. It’s always best to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement routine.
