NHS ELIGIBILITY CALCULATOR

Check your eligibility for NHS-funded IVF using our calculator and see the criteria set by your local integrated care board (ICB).

Am I eligible for IVF on the NHS?

IVF funding through the NHS isn’t the same across the country. Sadly, where you live can affect whether or not you qualify for NHS support—a postcode lottery that leaves many people confused and frustrated. That’s where our NHS IVF Eligibility Calculator comes in.

By entering the postcode of your GP practice, you’ll see:

  • Which integrated care board (ICB) covers your area. (Please note that this is based on the postcode of the GP practice you are registered and not your personal address.)
  • Whether NHS-funded IVF is available
  • What criteria you’ll need to meet to be considered for treatment

This tool is quick, simple, and gives you a clearer view of your options before speaking to your GP.

What to do if you're eligible

Once you’ve used our calculator to identify your local integrated care board (ICB) and reviewed the eligibility criteria, here’s what to do next:

17-1
Speak to your GP

Book an appointment with your GP to discuss your fertility journey and request an NHS referral. Your GP will check if you meet the local eligibility requirements and advise on any next steps if you don’t (e.g. BMI or lifestyle changes).

18-1
Get referred for fertility tests

If you meet the ICB criteria, your GP will refer you (and your partner, if applicable) for initial investigations. These usually include blood tests, semen analysis, and scans. The results will help guide the next stage of your care.

19-1
Wait for your fertility clinic referral

Once your test results are back, your GP will refer you to an NHS-approved fertility clinic. Waiting times can vary depending on your area, but your GP will explain what to expect.

20-1
Attend your clinic consultation

At your first appointment, the clinic will review your history and test results. If IVF is recommended and you’re eligible under your ICB’s policy, they’ll start building your treatment plan.

What if you're not eligible

If the calculator shows that NHS funding isn’t available in your area, or that you don’t meet the criteria, it can be disappointing—we completely understand. But there are still next steps you can take:

  • Speak to your GP: They’ll know your medical history and may still refer you for testing or support.
  • Check again later: ICB policies can change. What’s true now might not be the case in six months.
  • Consider self-funded options: We’re here to talk through private IVF options if that’s something you’d like to explore.

We’ll always do our best to help you find a way forward, no matter the outcome.

Why does NHS IVF vary by postcode?

Each ICB sets its own rules. These might include things like:

  • Whether you’ve had children before
  • Your age
  • How long you’ve been trying to conceive
  • Your BMI (more on this below)
  • Whether you smoke

It’s one of the more difficult parts of navigating fertility treatment in the UK. Even though the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides guidelines, not every area follows them to the letter.

We know this can feel unfair. That’s why we’ve built this tool—to help you make sense of it all.

A quick note on BMI

Most ICBs include body mass index (BMI) as part of their criteria for NHS-funded IVF. If your BMI is over 30—or under 19 in some areas—you might not be eligible. There are often other health-related requirements too, so it’s worth checking.

Disclaimer on NHS funding data

We’ve done our best to ensure that the information in our NHS IVF Calculator is accurate and up to date. The data is based on publicly available policy documents from each integrated care board (ICB), and we review it regularly.

However, NHS IVF funding criteria can change without warning—and sometimes local variations aren’t widely published. Because of this, we recommend you always confirm directly with your ICB or speak to your GP for the most up-to-date information on your eligibility.
