BMI and fertility: What you need to know

The body mass index (BMI) is a tool used by healthcare professionals to determine whether your weight falls into a low, moderate, or high category. To work out your BMI, you divide your weight by your height squared.

It is far from perfect, but when it comes to whether or not someone is ready for fertility treatment it’s the best tool we have.

Being overweight or underweight can make it harder to conceive naturally.  Unfortunately, being overweight can make fertility treatment much harder and puts you at risk of complications during treatment and during pregnancy.

For fertility treatment at Care Fertility, we take patients with BMIs between 19-35.

How does weight affect fertility?

A person’s weight plays an important role in fertility health by influencing factors such as hormone balance, menstruation, ovulation, and overall reproductive health. Some people with very high or very low body fat can stop menstruating regularly, this is an example of weight affecting reproductive health.

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important lifestyle factors for fertility.
