What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is a method of assisted reproduction where a woman carries and delivers a baby for another person or couple, often referred to as the intended parents (IPs). This arrangement is invaluable for couples unable to carry a pregnancy themselves, providing a pathway to biological parenthood.

Surrogacy involves a legal and emotional commitment between the surrogate and the IPs, supported by medical professionals to ensure a successful and positive experience. At Care Fertility, we guide you through the complexities of surrogacy with compassion and expertise, ensuring you feel supported at every step.

Types of surrogacy

Care Fertility offers both straight (traditional) and host (gestational) surrogacy options to accommodate the diverse needs of our same-sex male couples and AMAB individuals:

Straight surrogacy

Also known as genetic or traditional surrogacy, this method involves the surrogate using her own eggs and being artificially inseminated with the sperm of one of the intended parents (IPs). As a result, the surrogate has a genetic connection to the baby.

Host surrogacy

Also known as gestational surrogacy, this method involves the creation of embryos using either the eggs of a donor or one of the intended parents, combined with sperm from a donor or another intended parent. The embryo is then transferred to the surrogate's uterus for gestation. In host surrogacy, the surrogate has no genetic relationship to the baby.

Working with egg donors and surrogates

You’ll work with our donor team to find an egg donor that matches your needs—whether that’s physical traits, heritage, or something else. From there, we coordinate the full IVF process and embryo transfer with your surrogate.

We’ll also work closely with your chosen surrogacy organisation to ensure smooth clinical care throughout the journey.

Sperm sharing for gay men and same-sex couples

Sperm sharing is a way for gay men and same-sex male couples to access reduced-price IVF treatment while helping others who need donor sperm to start their families.

As a sperm sharer, you’ll donate sperm to be used in someone else’s treatment. In return, you'll receive £3,000 off your own IVF cycle or egg recipient treatment package.

You’ll go through screening to ensure your sperm is suitable for donation. This includes:

  • A semen analysis and medical history review

  • Blood and urine tests

  • Genetic and lifestyle questionnaires

  • The option to provide a pen portrait and goodwill message for future recipients

You can decide how many families your donation can help (up to 10), and you're free to change or withdraw your consent at any point before your sperm—or embryos created from it—are used.

Once your samples are approved for use, your treatment discount is applied. It’s a way to make IVF more affordable while giving someone else the chance to start their family too.

Frequently asked questions

We know that starting a family as a same-sex male couple can feel overwhelming at times. You’ve probably got questions—we’re here to help. Here are some of the things we’re often asked by people just like you.

Want to dive deeper? Visit our Help Centre for more advice and support.

Is Care Fertility LGBTQ+ friendly? Yes—our clinics support gay dads, same-sex couples, trans and non-binary patients, and everyone from the LGBTQ+ community. You’ll get personalised care in a safe, inclusive environment, from your first consultation through to pregnancy test.
What fertility treatments are available for gay men?

Gay men and same-sex male couples usually build their family through egg donation and surrogacy. At Care Fertility, we support you through every step—choosing a donor, creating embryos, and working with your chosen surrogate. We also offer fertility testing, sperm sharing, and counselling support throughout your journey.

What is sperm sharing, and can gay men take part?

Yes—gay men can take part in sperm sharing, where you donate sperm to help others have a baby, and in return receive £3,000 off your own IVF treatment. You'll go through medical screening and provide samples in-clinic. Once your donation is approved for use, the discount is applied to your treatment package.

How does surrogacy work for same-sex couples? You’ll start by choosing a registered egg donor, and then we’ll use one or both partners’ sperm to create embryos through IVF. Those embryos are then transferred to your surrogate. We manage the clinical side, while you work with a surrogacy agency and legal team to complete the process.
How do we choose an egg donor as a gay couple? You’ll have access to our regulated donor programme, with a wide range of profiles to choose from. Every donor is fully screened and registered with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). You can select based on characteristics important to you—like ethnicity, physical traits, or background. We’ll guide you through the whole process.
Do we need a surrogacy agency? Yes. While Care Fertility provides all medical care and IVF treatment, we don’t recruit or match surrogates. You’ll need to work with a surrogacy agency or independently find a surrogate, and a legal advisor can help you put the right agreements in place. We’ll collaborate with your team to keep the clinical process on track.
