Professor Arri received his undergraduate medical education from the University of Birmingham, and completed his subspecialist training in reproductive medicine and surgery at Guy’s Hospital, London.
Career
Professor Arri Coomarasamy is a Consultant Gynaecologist at Care Fertility Birmingham, with over 20 years experience in clinical medicine. His expertise spans across various area including IVF, ICSI, implantation care (for couples with repeated unsuccessful IVF cycles), recurrent miscarriage management, reproductive immunology and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Notably, he is recognised for his research at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital, focusing on reproductive medicine and the prevention of miscarriage.
Research
As Director of Tommy's National Centre for Miscarriage Research, Professor Arri leads the largest miscarriage research centre in Europe. his research efforts extend across the University of Birmingham, University of Warwick, and Imperial College, London resulting in the publication of over 140 research articles in high-impact journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, the British Medical Journal and Human Reproduction. He has also authored 5 medical textbooks, over 40 medical chapters, and an award-winning book on “Assisted Conception Treatment: Challenges and Management Options”. His impressive portfolio includes numerous national and international multicentre randomised controlled trials.
Teaching
Professor Arri takes pride in mentoring junior doctors and researchers, contributing to the development of several outstanding clinicians and researchers.
Membership of Professional Bodies
Professor Arri serves on several international and national committees. These include Joint Global Health Trials Panel of Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, and Department for International Development, various World Health Organisation committees, and the Early Pregnancy Clinical Studies Group. He is the founding trustee of Ammalife, a UK-registered charity dedicated to reducing maternal deaths in low-income countries across the world. Additionally, Professor Arri Coomarasamy has worked within the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre's Women’s Metabolic Health research theme, and has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his impactful research helping women and families.
Published Work
His research portfolio includes numerous national and international multicentre randomised controlled trials, including:
- The PROMISE Trial (NEJM, 2015), exploring the role of progesterone in women with unexplained recurrent miscarriages,
- The TABLET Trial (NEJM, 2019), evaluating the effects of levothyroxine therapy to prevent miscarriages in women with thyroid antibodies
- The PRISM Trial (NEJM, 2019), evaluating the effects of progesterone therapy for women with early pregnancy bleeding,
- The E-MOTIVE Trial (NEJM, 2023), exploring the effects of early detection and first-response management of postpartum haemorrhage with a bundle of care in low resource countries.
- The LOCI Trial (ongoing), studying the effects of letrozole versus clomifene, with or without metformin, for ovulation induction in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
