9 facts about our sperm bank

9 Facts About Care Fertility's Sperm Bank | Care Fertility
5:55

Did you know that Care Fertility has its own sperm bank? If you’re considering treatment using donor sperm, it’s reassuring to know that our sperm bank offers a carefully screened selection of UK-based donors, along with expert support to guide you through the process.

Choosing a sperm donor can be an emotional and significant decision, and we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible.

Here are some interesting things you might not know about our sperm bank:

Fact 1: We have a diverse selection of donors

Care Fertility’s sperm bank has over 70 sperm donors from more than 25 different ethnic backgrounds. We understand that finding a donor who shares your ethnicity or physical characteristics is important, and we work hard to ensure a diverse range of donors are available. Our thorough donor screening process ensures that all donors meet strict medical and ethical standards, giving you confidence in your choice.

2. We provide personalised support

Unlike ordering from an online sperm bank, our dedicated sperm donor coordinators provide one-to-one support to help you find the best donor for you—making the process easier and less overwhelming. We know that selecting a donor is not just about matching physical traits but also about understanding your personal needs and preferences. Our team will take the time to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and ensure you feel fully supported at every stage.

Fact 3: You can reserve your donor's sperm for future treatment
You can reserve sperm for one treatment cycle at a time, but if your treatment is successful and you’d like to use the same donor again, reserving additional samples is straightforward. Many patients want to ensure that future siblings share the same genetic background, and our team can help you plan ahead by discussing the option of reserving extra samples from your chosen donor. Availability can vary, so we recommend having these conversations early in your journey.

Fact 4: Seamless delivery to your Care Fertility clinic
We manage all the logistics, ensuring your chosen sperm sample arrives safely at your chosen Care Fertility clinic, ready for use in your treatment. Our team coordinates every step, from securing your chosen sample to ensuring it is safely transported and stored in optimal conditions. By handling the entire process in-house, we remove any additional stress or uncertainty, allowing you to focus on your treatment with peace of mind.

Fact 5: We use only UK-based donors
Unlike many international sperm banks, Care Fertility exclusively recruits sperm donors from the UK and does not export sperm overseas or to non-Care Fertility clinics. This means our donors are unlikely to achieve any more families beyond the 10-family limit permitted in the UK unlike donors from international sperm banks.

All our donors comply with UK regulations and are identifiable to any children born from donation when they reach 18. This transparency aligns with UK laws and ensures donor-conceived individuals have access to their genetic history in the future if they choose to explore it.

Fact 6: We ensure limited family distribution
Each sperm donor at Care Fertility is limited to helping a maximum of 10 families, ensuring a responsible and considered approach to donation. This guideline, set by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), helps manage the number of donor-conceived siblings and provides reassurance to families about the scope of donation. We believe in ethical and responsible sperm donation, and this limit supports a balanced and controlled system.

Fact 7: We have donation locations across the UK
All sperm donations are collected at Care Fertility clinics, which are located across the UK, ensuring a controlled and professional process. This means that every donor undergoes a consistent and rigorous medical screening, and their samples are processed by highly trained specialists. By keeping donations within our clinics, we maintain the highest standards of care, safety, and compliance with UK fertility regulations.

Fact 8: We do comprehensive screening
Our specialist donation team conducts thorough screening and health checks for every sperm donor, following strict regulatory and medical guidelines. This includes genetic testing, infectious disease screening, and an in-depth personal and family medical history review. Donors also undergo counselling to ensure they fully understand the implications of sperm donation, both for themselves and for any future donor-conceived children. We take every precaution to ensure that only the most suitable donors are approved for our programme.

Fact 9: Our embryologists ensure expert sperm preparation
Our embryology team prepares all sperm samples in specialist laboratories to ensure the highest standards for successful treatment. Sperm samples are carefully processed, frozen, and stored using advanced cryopreservation techniques, maintaining their quality until they are needed for treatment. Our laboratories adhere to the highest professional and regulatory standards, ensuring that every step is taken to optimise the success of your fertility journey.
