What to do if you're not ready to decide yet

Whether you're weighing up starting treatment at all, choosing between egg freezing and waiting, or thinking about donor conception, it's entirely normal to reach a point where you simply don't know yet. That uncertainty doesn't mean you're behind. It usually just means you need more information, more time, or both.

Quick jump:

Why the pressure to decide can feel so intense

A lot of the pressure around fertility decisions doesn't come from your own timeline at all. It comes from age-related statistics you've read online, from a friend's experience that may have nothing to do with yours, or from a sense that everyone else seems to know exactly what they want. It's worth separating out what's genuinely relevant to your own situation from what's simply noise, and a conversation with your own care team is usually the quickest way to do that.

It's also worth remembering that most fertility decisions aren't one-off, all-or-nothing choices. Testing, freezing, and treatment can happen in stages, with room to reassess at each point.

Getting information without committing to anything

You don't need to have made a decision to speak to us. If you'd simply like to check where you stand, a fertility assessment gives you a clear picture of your hormone levels, your ovarian reserve, or a semen analysis, purely for your own understanding and without signing you up for treatment. If you're leaning more towards starting treatment or looking into egg freezing, the pre-treatment bundle covers the more in-depth tests your fertility specialist will need before either of those, so you're not doing this in two stages later on. For a lot of people, either option is the missing piece: knowing your own starting point makes the rest of the decision easier to think through, one way or the other.

Our patient enquiry team can talk you through what tests might be useful for your situation when you call, so the process starts with a conversation rather than a form. If you'd simply like to understand your options before deciding anything, that's a perfectly good reason to get in touch.

Questions worth asking yourself

If you're stuck, it can help to get specific rather than trying to answer the whole question in one go. What part of the decision feels hardest, the treatment itself, the cost, the outcome, or something else entirely? Is there a piece of information you're missing that would make this easier, such as your own test results? And is there a smaller, reversible step you could take now, like booking an assessment, that would move you closer to an answer without locking you into anything further?

Breaking a large decision down into smaller, answerable questions tends to make it feel less overwhelming than trying to resolve everything at once.

Talking it through properly

Some decisions carry more weight than others, particularly around donor conception, surrogacy, or genetic testing, where the implications reach beyond the treatment itself. Our counselling team offers implications counselling specifically for this, giving you space to work through what a choice like this means for you, your relationships, or a future child, before you commit to anything. This is available whether you're making the decision with a partner or on your own, and whether you've started treatment or not.

You can find out more about the support available at any stage, whether or not you've started treatment.

What happens if you test now and decide later

Testing doesn't commit you to a treatment path. If your results come back and you decide you need more time, that's entirely reasonable, and your care team can talk through what that means, including whether anything is time-sensitive for your specific circumstances. Equally, if your results prompt a clearer sense of direction, you can move forward at whatever pace feels right.

On timing

Age is a genuine factor in fertility, and it's one reason some people choose to look into egg freezing as a way of keeping options open while they decide on the rest. That said, one conversation with our team won't commit you to a particular path, and there's no pressure to move faster than feels right for you.

If you'd like to talk through where you are, without any obligation to decide anything on the call, our patient enquiry team is available on 0800 564 2270.
