Danielle’s path to motherhood: How we welcomed Darcey

Danielle’s path to motherhood: How we welcomed Darcey

At Care Fertility, we know that trying for a baby isn’t always straightforward. For some, it happens easily—but for many others, the road to parenthood is full of unexpected challenges. When conceiving naturally wasn’t working for Danielle and her husband due to complex fertility issues, they turned to Care Fertility Tamworth for help. Here, Danielle shares her journey—the struggles, the hope, and the incredible moment that changed everything.

After four years together, my husband and I decided it was the right time to try for a baby. But month after month, nothing was happening.

After a year of trying, we went to the doctor to see if there was a reason why. The first step was a semen analysis, which my husband had done at Care Fertility Tamworth. His results came back fine, so the focus shifted to me.

I had various blood tests and a scan to check my fallopian tubes. The results showed that I had polycystic ovaries syndrome (PCOS), but my tubes were clear. While it was a relief that there was no obvious blockage, I knew that PCOS could make it harder to conceive naturally.

A difficult diagnosis

I was prescribed clomifene to stimulate ovulation, and we were hopeful that this would be the answer. But after six months with no success, my dosage was increased.

Two months later, I started experiencing a lot of pain. I went to the doctor, who asked me to take a pregnancy test. It came back positive. I was sent straight to the hospital for a scan, but they couldn’t find an embryo.

I had my HCG levels checked, but they weren’t rising as expected. The doctors suspected an ectopic pregnancy, but without confirmation, I was sent home and asked to return the following day for further monitoring. By the time I arrived at my next appointment, I felt incredibly unwell—so dizzy I could barely stand. I was rushed into surgery, where they confirmed what we had feared: the pregnancy was ectopic.

The embryo had implanted on my ovary, which meant they had to remove both the ovary and one of my fallopian tubes. When I woke up, the doctors also confirmed something I had long suspected—I had endometriosis.

It was devastating. In the space of 24 hours, I had lost a pregnancy, an ovary, and a fallopian tube. I couldn’t help but wonder if I would ever be able to conceive.

The start of IVF

At my follow-up appointment the next month, my consultant referred us for IVF. For the first time in a long time, I felt hope. It wasn’t going to be easy, but we finally had a real chance at becoming parents.

A few months later, we got the call to say our NHS funding had been approved.

"We were given a choice of clinics, and I picked Care Fertility because they had the best success rates out of the options available."

I started my injections on 27 December 2023. When the box of medication arrived, I felt completely overwhelmed. I even cried. It was a lot to take in, but I reminded myself that every injection was bringing us closer to our baby. At first, I couldn’t bring myself to do them, so my husband helped. But I pulled myself together, and over time, I got used to it – I just kept reminding myself that all these injections were hopefully going to help us become parents.

The moment that changed everything

On 10th February 2024, we took a pregnancy test—and it was positive! We couldn’t believe it. We felt so lucky that treatment had worked on the first round.

Because of my previous ectopic pregnancy, I was given an early scan to check everything was okay. Thankfully, this time, everything was as it should be.

Life after treatment

On 26 September 2024, we welcomed our beautiful daughter, Darcey, into the world. She is amazing, and every day, I look at her and feel so incredibly grateful.

Fertility treatment is tough. It’s emotional, physically demanding, and sometimes overwhelming. But without it, we wouldn’t have our little girl.

If I could give one piece of advice to anyone about to start IVF, it would be this: focus on the possible outcome. Hold onto hope, and make sure you have a strong support system around you—it makes all the difference.

A thank you to Care Fertility

Care Fertility were fantastic from start to finish. Every single member of staff was lovely and helpful.

I saw Beth at Care Fertility Tamworth for most of my appointments—she was amazing, and we always had a nice chat. I also saw Peggy and Nicky, who were equally lovely. The team at Birmingham were just as friendly and welcoming.

We are so grateful to everyone at Care Fertility for helping us bring our beautiful baby girl into the world.
