Care Fertility and Birmingham City University are thrilled to announce the Level 7 Module for Holistic scanning in Assisted Reproduction. This is the first instance of a private fertility provider partnering with a university to offer such a specialised module in female reproductive ultrasound.

Those who complete the course will be qualified to undertake all fertility screening, monitoring, and early pregnancy scans.

This module aligns with the Royal College of Nursing's (RCN) fertility nurse framework and Care Fertility’s own modernising career framework for nurses and midwives, ensuring that participants receive education that is both relevant and forward-thinking.

Course modules

Aetiology of Fertility Study of the causes of infertility.
Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology Examination of the structure and function of the reproductive system.
Male Infertility Focus on factors and conditions that contribute to infertility in men.
Pharmacology in Infertility Use of medications and drugs in the treatment of infertility.
Ultrasound in Reproductive Practice Application of ultrasound technology in evaluating and treating reproductive issues.
Ultrasound in Early Pregnancy Use of ultrasound to monitor and assess early pregnancy.
Safety in Ultrasound Ensuring safe practices and minimising risks associated with ultrasound procedures.
Polycystic Ovaries (PCOS) The use of ultrasound to investigate and diagnose Polycystic Ovaries.

Course places

We offer limited places for external students each cohort, to support the RCN framework in enhancing skills and knowledge within the assisted reproduction sector.

- We offer 10 internal Care Fertility candidates.

Course fees The course will cost £900 per external candidate.
Course assessment

The summative assessments is completed via a portfolio of scans overseen by the mentor in house along with a reflective essay written to level 7 standard. There is also a formal assessment in the form of a recorded OCSE.

Equipment access

External candidates:

Candidates must work in an ultrasound setting, with both transvaginal and transabdominal options for scanning available, as they will need to complete a logbook in their own clinic for submission - practical sessions will not be offered by Care Fertility. 

The individual unit should have enough clinical workload to undertake at least one scan list per week to enable training.

The trainer must be either a BFS ultrasound trainer, level 7 qualified or GMC registered. All qualifications of mentor must be added to the application along with contact details.

Internal candidates:

For internal candidates that are already located at a Care Fertility clinic, they should ensure the following:
That the individual unit should provide access to a regular pelvic ultrasound service. 

The centre should have an adequate clinical workload to ensure the trainee can undertake at least one training scan list per week both supervised and unsupervised. 

The centre should be able to have both transvaginal and transabdominal options for scanning available although the trainee is aware much of the assessment is completed via logbook, and VIVA is the use of transvaginal scanning

The trainer must be either be a BFS ultrasound trainer or MSC level qualified. If the training centre does not have this available, then please discuss with the course leads to discuss training lists being observed at Care Fertility Leeds.
